Does the dental implant procedure hurt?

Our patients are often pleasantly surprised by how comfortable dental implant surgery is. Because we perform placement under local anesthesia, the treatment area will be fully numb. During the procedure, you should not feel pain, only some pressure or movement at most.

During the Implant Procedure

If you experience anxiety or just want a more relaxing visit, we offer nitrous oxide and oral sedation. The procedure is straightforward, and many patients compare the experience to having a filling or extraction.

Recovery After Implant Placement

Some discomfort is normal once the anesthesia wears off. This typically includes mild soreness, swelling, or tenderness around the implant site for a few days. Most patients manage this effectively with over-the-counter pain medication.

Here is what to expect during recovery:

  • Mild soreness for the first two to three days
  • Swelling that gradually subsides within a week
  • A return to normal activities for most patients within a day or two

Following your aftercare instructions helps keep discomfort to a minimum. This includes eating soft foods, avoiding the implant site while it heals, and keeping the area clean as directed.
