Many patients think of a routine dental visit as just a cleaning. In practice, a complete dental exam covers much more than that. As your Marysville dentist, here is what I check during a full examination.
Tooth-by-Tooth Examination
I carefully check each tooth for decay, cracks, worn enamel, and existing fillings or older restorations that may need attention. This level of detail requires a thorough clinical evaluation because x-rays alone cannot show everything.
Gum Health Assessment
Our hygienist measures the space between your teeth and gums using a small probe. Healthy measurements are between one and three millimeters. A deeper measurement may indicate gum disease. If gum disease is present, they will discuss the next steps with you.
Oral Cancer Screening
I visually check for early signs of oral cancer at each exam. This assessment includes the tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, and throat. The screening adds only a few minutes to the appointment, but finding changes early can make a difference in treatment outcomes.
Bite and Jaw Assessment
Another important part of your evaluation is checking how your upper and lower teeth come together when you bite. I may also assess the jaw joint for signs of strain or dysfunction. Bite problems can contribute to tooth wear and jaw discomfort over time if not addressed.
Diagnostic X-Rays
We will update your x-rays as needed to have the most current picture of your oral health, which helps me detect problems that aren't visible during a clinical exam. This includes decay between teeth, bone changes, and issues below the gumline. Marysville Dentistry uses digital x-rays, which produce clear images at a lower radiation level than older systems.
A Review of Findings
At the end of the exam, I will explain my findings and review my recommendations. We don't proceed until you fully understand the issue and feel confident in your treatment plan.
