Intravenous (IV) sedation is an excellent option for patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety.  It is a method employed by dentists to achieve a controlled level of sedation for patients during dental treatments by directly administration of sedative medications through an intravenous line.  Additionally, medications to reduce pain, inflammation and antibiotics can all be administered intravenously.

What does it provide

IV sedation is effective in reducing moderate to severe anxiety.  It offers several benefits:

  1. Customized Sedation Levels: IV sedation offers a high degree of control over the level of sedation, allowing dental professionals to adjust and maintain the patient's comfort throughout the procedure.

  2. Rapid Onset and Titration: IV administration enables swift onset of the sedative's effects. The sedation level can be titrated or adjusted in real-time, ensuring the patient's relaxation and cooperation.

  3. Deeper Sedation Options: IV sedation can provide deeper levels of sedation compared to other methods, making it suitable for more complex or lengthy procedures.

  4. Amnesia Effect: Similar to other sedation methods, IV sedation often induces an amnesic effect, causing patients to have limited recollection of the procedure, reducing anxiety about future visits.

  5. Pain Management: Medications to reduce pain can be used in conjunction with local anesthesia to truly optimize pain control throughout the procedure.

  6. Professional Monitoring: Dental professionals continuously monitor the patient's vital signs, such as heart rate and blood pressure, during the procedure to ensure safety.

It's important to note that IV sedation is not suitable for all patients.  Individuals with specific respiratory or hepatic (liver) conditions, along with various other medical circumstances, might not be optimal candidates for its application.  Additionally, a separate and full medical history is required.  A patient must have another individual take them to and from the appointment.  The patient cannot drive.
