Do My Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Extracted?
Not everyone will need their wisdom teeth removed, and Dr. Halasa can determine after an evaluation whether extraction is recommended.
Here are the situations in which we do recommend extracting wisdom teeth:
- Crowding — Most people don’t have enough room for their wisdom teeth. If that’s the case, they may crowd neighboring teeth and compromise the results of previous orthodontic treatment, potentially ruining the alignment of straightened teeth.
- Cleanliness — Third molars arrive at the back of your mouth behind your second molars. Some people struggle to reach them for proper brushing and flossing. If you can’t keep them clean, you’re more susceptible to developing problems like tooth decay and gum disease.
- Impaction — Wisdom teeth may remain impacted, meaning they are stuck beneath the gumline. Impacted wisdom teeth can result in an infection and should be removed.
- Protect Neighboring Teeth — If your wisdom teeth arrive at odd angles, it could be detrimental to neighboring teeth and cause them harm or damage.
